As part of the I Choose program, students in grades kindergarten through second also have the opportunity to explore communication skills through the Lucy Calkin's Writer's Workshop. Students listen to daily readings from a variety of genres.  They are given the opportunity to respond to literature through a variety of activities including choral reading, role playing, Readers' Theater, plays, writing, art. and music.  

Students are engaged in Effective Writing Strategies by using the Lucy Calkin's philosophy which enables them to:

• Envision themselves as an author

• Formulate a bank of "seed" ideas to consider for development

• Select a "seed" for writing and development

• Nurture the "seed" before and after writing

• Conferencing during writing to help improve student writing

• Teaching revision strategies through minilessons
